Ogun Recruits 1000 Teachers for Rural School

The Ogun State Teaching Service Commission (TESCOM) has kicked-off the new Gateway Grassroots Teachers' Scheme (GGTS) in the state. This was sequel to the approval or recruitment of 1,000 graduates by Otunba Gbenga Daniel's administration in his determination to improve the quality of education in every part of the state.

The recruitment exercise, aimed at employing and injecting the best professionally qualified teachers into grassroots schools, showed that about 50% of the newly recruited teachers have Second Class Upper Division in various core disciplines.

The Chairman TESCOM, Akogun Segun Okeowo stated that the recruitment exercise focused mainly on degree holders, pointing out that the former Voluntary Teachers' Scheme concentrated on National Certificate of Education (NCE) holders in the last three years, with over 4,500 of them offered appointment out of the 6,00 recruited.

He said the era of employing NCE graduates in secondary schools was gradually and systematically phased out, adding that they would only be considered where degree holders are scare in specific core subjects.

According to the Chairman, the era of regarding teaching as a transit career or profession was gone, insisting that teaching was now an attractive and respected profession. He stressed that only the best should be allowed to impart knowledge in secondary schools students in order to give them a solid foundation.

Applicants who applied for the scheme are directed to check their names at the Teaching Service Commission Headquarters, Oke-Ilewo, Abeokuta.
